Chocolate orange-cado brownies

Deciding which recipe to launch with for my new website was a no brainer! I just can’t get enough of this recipe and I couldn’t wait to share it with you! One of the amazing things about them is that they’re everything you’d expect from a brownie: chocolatey, dense yet slightly gooey at the same time but the great thing is, they’re SO much better for you than the conventional brownie. They honestly feel so indulgent when you eat them that you quickly forget that they’re actually healthy! Starting with the flour, I use buckwheat which is ideal if you are looking for a gluten-free baking alternative. Although it has ‘wheat’ in the name, it’s completely wheat & gluten free because it’s actually a fruit seed that’s related to rhubarb! I personally love using buckwheat as it’s such a versatile ingredient with a lovely nutty flavour plus it’s an excellent source of fibre and magnesium which is always a bonus! The oranges in this recipe really make it so sweet and refreshing. They have a wealth of nutrients including vitamin C, and vitamin A. Since they’re full of soluble fiber, oranges can help lower cholesterol plus they contain high levels of beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant that helps keep the skin looking fresh and prevent the signs of ageing, which is always great to hear! The avocados in this recipe really are essential in terms of the overall texture and taste of the brownies. They are packed with potassium (more potassium than bananas even) which is beneficial to control high blood pressure and they’re also mainly composed of fats – but the healthy heart-friendly type! They really do add a lovely creaminess to the brownie which is so heavenly. Another great thing about these brownies is that no refined sugars are used. I use pure maple syrup - it just compliments the other flavours really nicely without adding chemical nasties present in white refined sugars. I’ll admit, I was originally a bit sceptical about being able to make a ‘healthy’ brownie but after trying these I honestly proved myself wrong! They’re super easy to make and can be whipped up in no time at all. You just have to try them!
